Fried Okra & Fried Green Tomatoes

These two southern sides are the epitome of the Deep South.

Ingredients
  

  • 4-6 Green Tomatoes (sliced ¼" thick)
  • 2 lbs Okra (sliced into ½" pieces)

Wet Marinade

  • 2 Egg Whites
  • 2 tbsp Hot Sauce
  • ½ cup Buttermilk

Dry Mixture

  • 1 cup Cornmeal
  • ½ cup Flour
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • ½ tsp Cayenne Pepper
  • ½ tsp Onion Powder
  • ½ tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 tbsp Sugar

Instructions
 

  • Slice Tomatoes and Okra.

Wet Marinade

  • Mix together Egg Whites, Hot Sauce and Buttermilk and soak vegetables in the marinade.

Dry Mixture

  • Blend together Cornmeal, Flour, Salt, Cayenne Pepper, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder and Sugar.
  • Coat wet vegetables in flour mixture and fry in skillet with 1" hot cooking oil.
  • Drain on paper towel and sprinkle with a little salt.
